Journeying Across the Solway
For many years there has been the ambition to create a continuous coastal path over 200 miles long between Gretna and Stranraer.
Over the years Dumfries and Galloway Council have been carrying out ad hoc access improvements along the coast core path network, recently completing the Rhins of Galloway coast path near Stranraer. The Coast Path project will improve the access infrastructure along the existing coastal core paths. This includes installing gates, bridges, boardwalks and surface improvements where needed, as well as improved directional signage, information and interpretation boards.
SCAMP are looking at a phased approach, dividing the route into sections of no more than 20 miles. We are currently drawing up plans to identify works and missing links within the core path network. The proposed route would join up the King Charles III England coast path with the established Ayrshire coast path. It would also link into existing long-distance routes such as the Annandale Way, Southern Upland Way and the Mull of Galloway trail, to create more multiday walking opportunities throughout Dumfries and Galloway.
As part of SCAMP, we are looking at upgrading coastal car parks and their facilities as the main ‘gateway’ access points to discovering and exploring the Solway Coast. We are undertaking an audit of the facilities, signage and information available at 14 existing car parks spread along the north Solway coast. The aim is to upgrade these sites so they are more welcoming to visitors and their local communities alike.

“Access to the coast is important to increase people’s appreciation, understanding and knowledge of the landscapes and habitats of the north Solway coast. Improving access along the coast will have multiple health and wellbeing benefits. Improving the coastal path network will encourage more people to explore the coast and appreciate the fantastic seascape on their doorsteps.”
