As our coastal habitats are restored and nature thrives again, it brings opportunities to make a difference to the lives of people. Our communities can experience benefits to their wellbeing, gain knowledge and skills, and celebrate biodiversity.

SCAMP helps communities make the most of these opportunities by improving access and providing SCAMP-related jobs. These job opportunities will vary from those in habitat restoration, culture, wellbeing and new tourism business opportunities in a healthy thriving Solway.
Stories of the Solway
Stories of the Solway is a filmmaking skills project delivered as part of SCAMPs Young CreativesCoastodians Programme. The sessions brought together young people from Dumfries and Galloway and young people working with the Deport, a charity supporting refugees and migrants on their journey to become new scots.
The filmmaking sessions took place out on the Solway Coast and in editing suites at the Depot and the Stove artists collective. The films were all individual and shared a joy and beauty experienced by our young creatives in these coastal locations.
Stories from the Solway is an intercultural project delivering film and photography storytelling skills with Colin Tennant and Saskia Coulson working with SCAMP Landscape Connections and The Depot. We are grateful to The Holywood Trust and National Lottery Heritage Fund for making this project possible.
Working with schools is incredibly important to SCAMP. It gives our young people the chance to explore the seascape and become enchanted in the magic of the natural world. Young people can help us resolve the challenges faced by our planet. Working with schools allows us to reach a wider community of interest and create career paths for young learners as they move through the different stages of their learning.
Carys Mainprize, Crichton Carbon Centre’s Education Officer, is testing the delivery of SCAMP science lessons in secondary schools. Carys says:
“I’m starting to develop really exciting ways of engaging pupils with habitats like saltmarsh. What if you could learn about the merse through a puzzle like an ecological detective? What if young artists could practice responding to a commission brief from an environmental organisation working on saltmarsh? What if pupils could hold and touch 3D printed species found there in their own classroom?”
Through SCAMP, we have connected with an incredible group of enthusiastic and interested coastodians who have been actively involved in our walks and talks, SCAMP picnics, research trips and recent expeditions in the SCAMP boat out into the Solway in search of oyster reefs, seagrass and marine biodiversity.
