The workshops are taking place next week, the first week of the School holidays and offer some great creative/learning experiences for all the family.

All the workshops will be based at the Creative Hub in Stranraer and a great opportunity to learn more art making skills and see the film “Solway Unseen” which has been created with incredible photography and film footage shot by the Newton Stewart Sub Aqua Club and edited by eco filmmaker John Wallace. Janet Jones of Creative Stranraer explains what to expect;

Would you like to enjoy a creative session inspired by sea creatures and Stranraer’s oysters then do come along. The workshops are designed to be fun, creative and an opportunity to learn more about our marine environment. The workshops are free and are designed for young people, adults and all the family to enjoy. You don’t need any previous knowledge and experience just a sense of curiosity and creative adventure!”. For children under 8 years old, we ask parents to come along and join in.”

Wednesday 16th October – “Oyster Odyssey”- Create Your Own Grotto with Oysters, Meeting at the Creative Hub, 1pm – 3.00pm

Meeting at the Creative Hub at Stranraer, Nic Coombey will take you on a walk to find out more about Oysters and why they are so important to Stranraer and the outer Solway. After an adventure in search for Oyster shells we will return to the Creative Hub to create some sculptural Oyster grottos.

Grottos have been around for a long time often magical places in the form of small caves hidden away in the rocks or coves of coastlines. Sometimes these caves were carved into creating decorative mythology inspired features. They can also be man made and became fashionable in gardens in the 16th and 17th century.

Thursday 17th October – Sea Creature Drawing Workshop (Creative Hub, 1pm – 3.00pm)

Meeting at Stranraer’s Creative Hub join environmental artist, Jan Hogarth to take a journey into the deep where you will be invited to a showing of eco filmmaker, John Wallace’s film from edited underwater footage shot by Newton Stewart Sub Aqua Club and SCAMP research trips.

After the film, Jan will show you how to use stills and film footage to create some fabulous drawings that celebrate and reimagine those sea creatures. Taking inspiration from the little creatures and making them big!!

Saturday 19th October – Into the Deep” Sea Creature Sewing Workshop (Creative Hub, 1pm – 3.00pm)

We will be showing a film by eco film of underwater edited footage by Newton Stewart Sub Aqua Club which gives us a glimpse of what might be down there. Then we invite you to imagine and create your very own sea creature from recycled materials. Lorna Graham, sewing expert, will be on hand to show you how and guide you through the creation of your sea creature.
