What wee creatures are hiding in the merse, the heath, and the beach at Powfoot?
Malcom Haddow from the SWSEIC (South West of Scotland Environmental Information Centre) will be at Powfoot to help you gain the skills to ID the nature around Powfoot. You may might even discover a rare species. Session 11am-12noon and 1.00pm – 2.00pm. Citizen Science. All ages.
Join us for a fun filled session of looking closely at the nature around the coastal village of Powfoot. Will you be able to find and identify a rare species? Malcom Haddow from the SWSEIC (South West of Scotland Environmental Information Centre) will be at Powfoot to show how to use nature ID apps on your phone to ID plants, animals, insects, birds and invertebrates hiding away in Powfoot’s beautiful seascape.

Young Nature Adventurers
Do you want to be a Nature Adventurer?
Join ranger Toni and learn to be an animal tracker, explore the wildlife that’s lives in the pools, the heath, the woodlands and the beach. Session runs from 11-12pm & 1-2pm, 2-3pm. Fun citizen science for families and kids.
What will you find in the heath, the beach and the woodlands of Powfoot? Ranger Toni will help you and your family explore the woodlands, the heath, the merse and its pools and the beach to uncover just what wildlife might have their home in the area between the sea and the land. You will learn to be an animal trackers, to imagine being that creature, what dangers they might face and tell their stories around a beach camp.
Powfoot’s Fascinating History & Designed Landscape
Join us for a walk and talk with countryside ranger Duncan Ford of Hoddom and Kinmount Estate, who will explore the fascinating history of Powfoot and its remarkable designed landscape. 2 – 3pm. Walk and Talk. All ages.
Developed in the late nineteenth century as a planned village, Powfoot attracted visitors seeking the restorative benefits of sea air, salt water and picturesque woodland walks. Discover the vision behind the village’s creation, the ambitious landscaping that shaped its surroundings, and the impact these plans had on the natural environment.
The Pow of Powfoot
Join local marine & river ecologist, Emilie Wardhaugh of Galloway Rivers Trust, to explore the health of the Pow Burn where it flows into the Solway. Find out more about the invertebrates, birdlife and nature which calls this burn home and the impacts humans and climate have had on its ecosystems. Sessions run from 1-2pm and 3-4pm Fascinating Citizen Science. Older kids and adults.
The Pow burn at Powfoot is the origin of the villages name, foot meaning the end of the burn where it enters the Solway. The burn is however not flowing in the way it did in the past with has changed through time. How much has the changes in the way the burn flows impacted on the Pow burn’s health and the biodiversity that’s lives there? What kind challenges will the Pow face in the future with sea level rises and pressure on the land further up stream? What fish will survive and thrive and what species will struggle and how can we help?
All sessions start by meeting at the Bowling Green Hut (on the right as you enter Powfoot village).
